https://dharmawheel.org/

I am a serious person to others most of the time, honest (or try to be as honest as possible...) in everyday life, and when talking about the Buddha's teachings.

But when I make jokes, that's when I can possibly be not as-a-matter-of-fact, can lie (tell a untruth) in my jokes. So, if you're not looking for honesty from me as a rule, you can enjoy my jokes in that joke thread in the Lounge section of ''Dharma Wheel Engaged' message board'.

Today is Thursday, October 3, 2019.

My second Tanx memory: The unofficial result (not official) is I am in 1st place in today's Tanx tournament.

This is the second Tanx tournament I participated in since returning to Tanx on Thursday, September 5, 2019 (I skipped the three weeks between these two tournaments: the weeks of the Classic, Desert, and Mars arenas tournaments). Like I said, I was in 1st place, but the result has not become official yet:

BEFORE TODAY, I HAVE NEVER EVER GOT A 1ST PLACE TANX TOURNAMENT WIN EVER IN MY LIFE (as far as I know).

THIS TOOK ABOUT FOUR YEARS TO HAPPEN, SINCE I BEGAN MY QUEST THAT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THIS WEEKLY TANX TOURNAMENT (THAT'S ALL I'LL SAY). UP TO TODAY, ONLY 2ND PLACE FINISHES WAS THE BEST I COULD DO. BUT TODAY THE CONDITIONS WERE RIGHT FOR IT, FOR ONE THING, I GUESS.

4th memory from World of Tanks: I returned to World of Tanks.

( My third -- the previous one -- World of Tanks memory can be found here: https://samsarictravelling.blogspot.com/2019/05/3rd-memory-from-world-of-tanks-my-girl.html )

Today is Thursday, September 26, 2019. I returned to the online videogame World of Tanks over a month ago, I think it was, though I have the exact date somewhere else, but don't want to go look for it and divulge that information. I was away about 7 and a 1/2 months up to the time I returned.

I would not recommend videogaming if it harms your life. I found a way to play videogames without it harming my life like in the past, before I quit (then returned now).

Just one capture of a game I was in two days ago (a low results game for me). (CLICK ON CAPTURES TO SEE FULL VIEW):

As you can see from the capture, I am known publicly by my nick 'World_War_1_and_2'.

Now, below are some captures of a different game's results, which I played on September 18, 2019 (8 days ago) according to the files' date stamps, where I was the top scorer in that game -- I only have captures of after the game (the results shown after the game, the garage with the tank before and after repairs, and the performance characteristics of the tank), no captures of what was happening while I was playing that specific game (unlike the capture above of yesterday's game while I was in the game):

My first Tanx memory: The unofficial result (not official) is I am 2nd place for my first Tanx tourney in about 12-14 months I was away from the game.

Today is September 5, 2019:

My first flyordie.com Tanx tournament in about 13 months (about 12 months at least, and about 14 months at most, I guess; the dates of the last results before I returned today, were in July or August of 2018, I am guessing (these results have been replaced with the new results from the tournament of today)). It was snow arena this week. As always, the tournament lasts for 1 hour.

I am the 'life & nature' player nick in the copy & paste of the Tanx tournament results.

Before the tournament, I bought a one year subscription to flyordie.com to be able to participate in their tournaments -- this Tanx tournament, specifically.

The unofficial result (not official -- have to wait about, at most, one week usually, before it may become official) is I am 2nd place.

I only solo trained (in empty arenas, password locked so stopping others from entering my arena -- snow arena and classic arena) for about 10 to 15 minutes before this tournament, and got 2nd place in this tournament that followed my solo training. And before I trained those 10 to 15 minutes before the tournament, I was away 12 to 14 months from the tournaments, and also maybe never training in any real serious way, or in any way maybe; and maybe more, not even playing the game regularly, or at most a few visits where I actually logged into the lobby or an arena, if at all -- I cannot remember -- in all those 12 to 14 months.

42.2.23 Wisdom and Knowledge Series, post #42. Buddhism, post #24: Yesterday's (July 11, 2019) post of my eating ways from childhood to now.

Wisdom and Knowledge Series, post #42. Buddhism, post #24 (42.2.23):

This was originally posted by me in the 'Dhamma Wheel' message board discussion titled 'Veganism: a host of issues.' -- https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=34734&start=105 -- and talks about my eating ways from childhood to now. BUT THE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ADDED AUGUST 24, 2019, IS SOLEY ADDED TO THIS SAMSARICTRAVELLING BLOG POST, AND NOWHERE AT 'DHAMMA WHEEL' MESSAGE BOARD:

Re: Veganism: a host of issues.

How I eat (or part of how I eat, because I do not reveal everything about myself; we'll see how much I say in this post):

I eat both meat and vegetables and fruit. I eat all healthy foods, whether they are animal or plant (vegetables and fruits) in origin.

I find eating vegetables, whether cooked or uncooked, but without anything like oil or sugar added to it preferably, I imagine cleans my large intestines.

Eating uncooked vegetables and being vegetarian also allows me to clean my system, is what I believed when I was growing up. I possibly do so today also. Except I will cook my vegetables sometimes now (that's all I'll say).

Eating whole wheat bread is good, or brown rice is good. But eating white rice is for enjoyment.

Eating meat is good.

samsarictravelling

EDIT: I did not say one thing, but now will say it:

This must be practiced: Never to eat meat that has been seen, heard, or suspected having been killed for one specifically.

samsarictravelling

ADDITIONAL INFO OF AUGUST 24, 2019:

A Buddhist follows the teaching of not intentionally killing any animal, so do not go to a restaurant and order a live crab or lobster to be prepared for your meal. Ordering the killing, instead of intentionally killing it yourself, is against Buddhist teaching also. You can still eat seafood, or almost any other type of meat, as long as you did not intentionally kill it yourself, order another to kill it for you, and if it was not seen, heard, or suspected of being killed for one specifically. Just some examples of meat I can eat while following this rule while living in a large, modern city in Canada: a bag of seafood medley in the frozen section of a grocery store; a lobster tail saran-wrapped on a styrofoam tray in the frozen section of a Superstore supermarket; buying a slab of meat cut from a larger slab of meat at a grocery store (the cow was killed elsewhere and I do not know who did it); and cans of sardines.

Eating meat is not good in the sense a sentient being dies because you eat it. But it is nutritionally good, if you find vegetarianism is not able to keep you healthy. In Theravada Buddhism the Buddha allowed the monks to eat meat that had not been seen, heard, or suspected of being killed for them (specifically?). As a Theravada Buddhist layman I practice that 'meat that has not been seen, heard, ...' teaching also (or what I think it means). In two senses eating meat is good: it tastes good (to me), and if science has it right according to reality, that in some or most cases, if not all cases, it is essential for health.

That's all for meat eating.

Now, about another thing in my original post:

I ate white rice as the norm, like most Asians, not eating "tasteless" brown rice. But around 2011 or 2012 or so, I had a health problem, and the main part of my (not the whole) solution was to eat brown rice, I am guessing. Whatever it was, whole grains -- brown rice, oats, whole wheat bread, whole grains bread -- have helped me in this health problem that has recurred once or more than once since then (but a later time or latest time(s) was never as severe as the first time or earliest times). I won't say what that health problem is, so you would not know if whole grains might or would, solve any physical health problem you might have. Sorry, just protecting myself.

I am presently physically well in my life, and also don't (need to??) eat whole grain foods like I used to (the health problem is presently solved). I have more in my health practices, but the rest is private. Sorry.

Now, one more thing relating to my original post:

Eating raw (uncooked), plain iceberg lettuce or romaine lettuce I imagine cleans my large intestines. I usually eat raw (uncooked), plain cilantro these days, but the lettuces are better maybe, or not. No salad dressing, oil, spices, salt, sugar, or anything. The lettuces also get rid of stomach aches, after some minutes after eating, maybe. Maybe cilantro does also, maybe. Try other green vegetables, if you want, and see.

That's all.

Dear all,

I wanted to thank you all again for your replies. DooDoot and samsarictravelling, thank you for directing me to MN 60. I had skimmed it in search what I was looking for, but missed the important bits. 😁 (kiriyavada, etc.)

Somewhat related, someone has something akin to "This being is bound to Samara, Kamma is his means for going beyond." in their signature. They list the reference as S I 38, I believe, which is SN 1:57 if I recall. But I can't find the source of the above translation. I think the word is something like parayana or paraya which is being translated as" going beyond" above, but most seem to take it to indicate "destiny." No need to go into the word destiny, I know we don't hold with presetermination. Just wondering about the source of the translation.

Metta and peace,
Bowing and thanks,
Upasaka Abhaya (Andrew)

I googled the quote -- but put a s in Samara to make it Samsara:

This being is bound to Samsara, Kamma is his means for going beyond

And got by tiltbillings, in his signature:

This being is bound to samsara, kamma is his means for going beyond. -- SN I, 38.

Source: viewtopic.php?t=723

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I checked what comprises Sutta Nipata:

https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitak ... index.html

To make a long story short: I don't think it is from the Sutta Nipata.

( Also, in my searching, I found 'SN' stands for Samyutta Nikaya, while 'Sn' stands for Sutta Nipata. Tiltbillings wrote 'SN', so he might have meant Samyutta Nikaya:

References
Citations
1. When referencing suttas from the Sutta Nipata the case-sensitive abbreviation "Sn" is used. This is distinguished from the abbreviation "SN" which traditionally refers to the Pali canon's Samyutta Nikaya.

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sutta_Nipata )

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I checked what comprises the Samyutta Nikaya:

https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/index.html

I noticed on that page -- I boldface the pertinent part:

Sagatha Vagga — The Section of Verses
1. Devata-samyutta — Devas
SN 1.55: Jana Sutta — Engendered {S i 37} [Thanissaro]. The Buddha answers some riddles. [TB]

S i 37 looks like possibly something to do with tiltbillings's 'SN I, 38'.

So I clicked it. And scrolled and saw -- I boldface different pertinent parts:

57. [PTS Page 038]. [\q 38/] ] Kiṃ su janeti purisaṃ kiṃ su tassa vidhāvati,
Kiṃ su saṃsāramāpādi kiṃ su tassa parāyaṇanti.

(Bhagavā:)
Taṇhā janeti purisaṃ cittamassa vidhāvati,
Satto saṃsāramāpādi kammaṃ tassa parāyaṇanti.

So the [PTS Page 038] stands for Pali Text Society or something to do with the Pali text, maybe. And it's on page 38 of that. Tiltbillings had 'SN I, 38'. Looking at the Pali, I saw the words samsara and kamma. Tiltbillings's quote had the words samsara and kamma in it, too ('This being is bound to samsara, kamma is his means for going beyond'). I may have found it!

I saw just that Pali did not give the whole meaning of tiltbillings's quote ('This being is bound to samsara, kamma is his means for going beyond'). To make a long story short, I think it could be tiltbillings giving his interpretation of some lines all found on that PTS page 38. I also give the English translation I got at SUTTACENTRAL for the Pali:

I boldface some parts so you can correlate it with the Pali page mentioned above at accesstoinsight.org:

So, to conclude:

Tiltbillings's quote:

This being is bound to samsara, kamma is his means for going beyond. -- SN I, 38.

In my opinion, is his summary of sections 57 to 59 as found on page 38 of PTS. Those sections 57 to 59 as found on page 38 of PTS translated into English (by Bhikkhu Sujato) are:

57. Gives Birth (3rd)

“What gives birth to a person?
What do they have that runs about?

“Craving gives birth to a person.

58. Deviation

“Lust is declared to be a deviation.

EDIT: If you were looking for the Pali source, I gave it:

“Taṇhā janeti purisaṃ,
cittamassa vidhāvati;
Satto saṃsāramāpādi,
kammaṃ tassa parāyanan”ti.

Maybe tiltbillings translated "parāyanan” (or whatever; I don't know how to read Pali) as 'going beyond', while Sujato and Bodhi both translate it as 'destiny'.

I think -- but I could be wrong -- tiltbillings specifically meant Nibbana when he said 'going beyond', while I think Bodhi when he said 'destiny', meant it could be a destiny of just another rebirth, or instead for some others, the attainment of Nibbana. Sujato might have just meant just another rebirth when he said 'destiny', or could have meant the same thing as Bodhi.

If what I say is really the situation, I don't know who is correct: tiltbillings, one of the monks, or both of the monks.

Because I did not know what "parāyanan" was all about until I reread your question post, and read this in coincidentally a presently discussed question right now, called 'Nibbana', I had answered with my opinion it was tiltbillings giving a summary of 57 to 59 of page 38:

The noble eightfold path has a clearly defined and very specific final goal (pariyosāna), a precise destination (parāyana). This goal is the elimination of passion, the elimination of aggression, and the elimination of delusion.

So, my interpretation of tiltbillings's quote may be wrong if he was just translating 57 on page 38, translating "parāyanan” as 'going beyond' (rather than 'destiny', like Sujato and Bodhi did).

(Or else it could still be right if tiltbillings was actually summarizing 57 to 59 on page 38, as I previously said, but that is unlikely.)

Now, about the MN 60:

If you want to understand it like I did, read that sutta in its entirety, and the notes Bhikkhu Bodhi gives for it (I think the notes are at the back of the book), from his Wisdom Publications edition of it. I bought the book, not the ebook, although you might want to buy the ebook if you want it right away:
